Foreword

The 1998 Nursing Monograph is evidence of the St Vincent's Healthcare Campus nurses' interest in scholarship and research. The wider nursing community in Australia now places much value on the need for sound and relevant nursing research with a goal to improve quality care for people. The activities of research and scholarship by nurses have been captured here by those who want to know more about their practice, and the need to critically examine their roles in a rapidly changing healthcare system. The pivotal position of nurses within this system demands an evolution of thought by nurses in evaluating how best to be leading and involved in such change.

The Campus Nursing Research Committee and the contributing authors are to be congratulated on their work in bringing this Monograph to publication. Members of the Committee are: Margaret Butler, Jacqui de Kroon, Kim Devery, Peta Drury, Marianne Goodwin, Julie Hunt, Birgit Kluge, Ann Knevitt, Peta McVey, John Miller, Chris Robinson, Ingrid Tartu, Dr Marianne Wallis and myself.

The sponsors of the 1998 St Vincent's Healthcare Campus Nursing Monograph are The Paul and Elizabeth Curran Foundation and Becton Dickinson. This generous sponsorship and support is greatly appreciated and has made possible the production of a high quality publication.

This monograph was launched at the Second St Vincent's Healthcare Campus Nursing Research Symposium held on 15th of May, 1998 at The Garvan Institute Medical Research.
