New CIAP Resources and Changes
New Therapeutic Guideline: Oral and Dental
The July eTG Complete update includes a new title
- TG: Oral and Dental - written in conjunction with the Australian Dental Association.
TG: Oral and Dental was written to assist general dental
practitioners in their day-to-day practice. However, during the writing process it became quite
apparent that the content would be valuable for other health professionals, particularly those
working in rural and remote communities.
Therapeutic Guidelines (eTG) is available under
‘Other Drug Resources’ or ‘Clinical Guidelines’ on left hand menu of CIAP.
New titles available on OVID
- Current Opinion in Supportive and Palliative Care - This new
quarterly resource provides easy access to vital and clinical advances in this growing field.
- Journal of Addiction Medicine - This peer-reviewed journal, from the
American Society for Addiction Medicine, covers a wide range of relevant topics, including
addiction in pregnancy, adolescent addiction, the drug-exposed neonate, pharmacology,
neuroimaging techniques, pathophysiology of addiction, biological and non-biological
therapies, issues in graduate medical education, and more.
- Journal of Neurologic Physical Therapy – This new resource publishes
research articles, critical reviews, case reports, and special interest papers that contribute to
the development of theory, evidence and the effective use of physical therapy for individuals
with neurologic conditions.
- Disaster Medicine & Public Health Preparedness is the first comprehensive
and authoritative journal emphasizing public health preparedness and disaster response for all
health care and public health professionals globally.
Nursing Consult - 3 new nursing journals now available
- Nursing Outlook – The Official Journal of the American Academy of
Nursing, Nursing Outlook provides innovative ideas for leaders in the nursing profession
through peer-reviewed articles and timely reports. Each issue examines current issues and
trends in nursing practice, education, and research, offering progressive solutions to the
problems facing the profession.
- Teaching and Learning in Nursing – The Official Journal of the
National Organization for Associate Degree Nursing (N-OADN).
- Journal of Professional Nursing – The Official Journal of the
American Association of Colleges of Nursing.
Each of these journals can be accessed from the

BMJ Clinical Evidence– move from OVID to BMJ Platform
Access to Clinical Evidence is available until 31 July 2007 via
the BMJ or OVID. After this date the OVID version will be withdrawn.
Clinical Evidence is the continually updated international
source of the best available evidence on the effects of common healthcare interventions. It describes
the best available evidence and if there is no good evidence it says so. Clinical Evidence specifically
aims not to make recommendations. Instead it provides the raw material for developing locally
applicable clinical practice guidelines.
You will find the links to each platform on the left hand menu of
CIAP under ‘Evidence Based Practice’.

New Clinical Guidelines available on CIAP
- Revised Snakebite & Spiderbite Clinical Management Guidelines - The guidelines
are available on a new webpage for Snakebite & Spiderbite which also includes articles authored by
Geoffrey Isbister on Snakebite and Spiderbite Management with a third to be coming shortly on
Marine Sting Management.
- Rural Emergency Clinical Guidelines for Adults - The intention of these
guidelines are to ensure early appropriate management of immediately, or imminently life threatening
conditions, and to relieve pain and suffering for patients at hospitals where medical practitioners are
not immediately available. The Guidelines reflect best clinical practice and are not mandatory, however,
they have been adopted and implemented across the State since 2004 providing essential clinical
support for clinicians.
- Eye Emergency Manual - The Eye Emergency Manual: An Illustrated Guide
is now available via CIAP. This manual is designed for use by all medical and nursing staff in
Emergency Departments across NSW. It allows a quick and simple guide to recognizing important
signs and symptoms, and management of common eye emergencies.
These guidelines can be accessed under Clinical Guidelines
in the left hand menu on the front page of CIAP.

June has been a very busy month for Victoria Gardner
(CIAP Training Coordinator). Rural
and remote areas have been the focus with 13 hospitals visited with a total road distance of
4,500kms covered in 14 days. There were 175 attendees at the sessions.

Did You Know? Martindale is available on CIAP?
Martindale
Encyclopaedic facts about drugs and medicines:
- Over 6,300 drug monographs
- 149,000 preparations
- 40,700 references
- 14,700 manufacturers
- Enables identification of medicines, the local equivalent and the manufacturer
- Includes herbals, diagnostic agents, radiopharmaceuticals, pharmaceutical excipients,
toxins, and poisons as well as drugs and medicines
Martindale is situated in Micromedex. You will need to
login to Micromedex and have the main search box visible. On the right hand side at the
bottom of the search box there is a button for Search Databases. Click this to
access Martindale by ticking the check box.

Did you know - you can find out the trade names of drugs used overseas?
Why? Imagine that a patient on holidays from the
UK comes to see you because they have run out of their medication and want a new
prescription. The only thing they can remember is the brand name of the drug, Lustral,
not the generic name. That brand isn’t sold in Australia. You want to find out the generic name.
Here’s how:
- Log in to CIAP
- Choose ‘MICROMEDEX’ from the menu
- Move the mouse over the ‘Drugs’ tab, and select the ‘Trade/Generic Drugs List’ option
- Type the trade name, Lustral, into the ‘Search drug Name’ box
- Choose either DRUGDEX or MARTINDALE
- Click the Search button
- Click on the link to Lustral in the ‘Tradename’ column to go to the information on the generic drug …
- … in this case Sertraline which is available in Australia

Drug Database Updates
CIAP online resources are updated regularly
according to the following schedule:
- eTG Complete (Therapeutic Guidelines) is updated every four months, last
updated 30/06/2007
- Micromedex is updated quarterly, last updated on 07/07/2007.
- MIMS is updated monthly (usually first Saturday of the month), last
updated on 30/06/2007.
- pAHM (Australian Medicines Handbook for PDA) is updated twice a year (January/July).
If you have downloaded this just before the new version is released (within 1 week) then
the validation code that will be emailed to you will not work with the old version. To
correct this you will need to delete the old version and start again with the new version.
A new release date of pAHM for the PalmOS version is September 2007.
