Welcome to the May edition of the CIAP Newsletter
Welcome to our second edition. We would like to thank
everyone for the positive response to our first CIAP newsletter. It was good to hear
that you enjoyed reading the newsletter and your comments were appreciated. Please continue to
provide feedback and don’t forget you can subscribe as an individual by sending an email to CIAP.
This month’s newsletter includes an update on the CIAP renewal process, information on the PDA resources available for download and an explanation of the OVID Medline database segments. Recent CIAP product changes are also highlighted.
Happy reading from the CIAP Team!

The CIAP Renewal for 2007 – 2008
It’s that time again when the annual CIAP renewal process gets underway.
This year the resources were reviewed in consultation with the Knowledge Management Reference Group who
confirmed all resources should be renewed. Unfortunately new resources were not considered due to price increases.
Further consultation will take place with the
Area Health Services before the renewal is complete for a July 1 commencement.
The Quality & Safety Branch have committed to renew the following journals:
- International Journal for Quality in Healthcare
- Quality & Safety in Healthcare
- The Emerald Healthcare Suite (which includes Clinical Governance and three other titles)
This will commence on 1st July 2007 and we would like to thank them for their
ongoing support of CIAP.
As part of the renewal process, statistics were reviewed and it was
extremely pleasing to note that there continues to be a substantial growth with a 49% increase this year to March.
Further information on statistics can be found on the CIAP Usage Statistics page under About
CIAP from the top menu.
It's CIAPs 10th Birthday in July. Let’s celebrate!!!
A major milestone will be celebrated in July when CIAP turns
10. In our 10th year our goals to improve access to decision support, support evidence-based health
care, reduce adverse events, improve clinical knowledge and improve communications between
clinician groups remain the same.

To give you an idea of how CIAP has grown we have included this miniature version of the CIAP usage graph. It demonstrates how CIAP usage has grown from virtually
nothing in March 1998 to over 5 million hits per month in March 2007. This is a fantastic achievement!
We are planning special events to mark this occasion
and to acknowledge the contributions of CIAP supporters over the past 10 years. The next 10 years will be
even better.

Download these CIAP resources to your PDA
Once you have logged in to CIAP you can download a
number of products to your PDA:
Micromedex on PDA
Micromedex on PDA is free for CIAP users and (available from
the CIAP left side menu under Micromedex) gives you information at a summary level for Drugs,
Disease, Toxicology, IV Compatibility and Drug Interactions. If you
need to drill down further you will need to login to Micromedex on the front page of CIAP as the memory required on a PDA is not sufficient.

OVID MEDLINE segments
The CIAP menu includes the 4 main options to cover all
searchable data available in the MEDLINE database so as to avoid having to change databases
too often to search the complete data.
The four options are:-
- 1996 - present
- 1950 - present
- OLDMEDLINE 1950 to 1965
- PREMEDLINE
- PubMed
OVID has provided the following information about the Old
Medline and PreMedline segments which are available on the CIAP menu.
Old Medline
An archive of records that existed before MeSH terms
and other current NLM data quality standards. As a result, these records cannot be given MEDLINE
status. We have created this separate segment for older records until NLM updates them.
For the 2007 Ovid Medline reload, we rebuilt Ovid
OldMedline to have the same configurations and functionality as Ovid Medline, complete
with limits and MeSH browsing when available. However, OldMedline records have less indexed
information than modern records, and as a result some of the limits return fewer or no results.
For complete information about OldMedline data,
see the NLM website.
PreMedline In-Process & Other Non-Indexed Citations
Note: map term to subject heading not available
– this is a Keyword Search database only
A database of partially indexed records that provides basic
citation information and abstracts. PreMedline records have not been indexed with MeSH terms
and other indexer-added data. New records get added to PreMedline every day. NLM assigns a
value to each record to indicate their point in processing: In-Process, In-Data-Review, and
PubMed-not-Medline.
Currently, Ovid does not receive records with a value
of “Publisher” or “Epub Ahead of Print” from NLM.

Ovid has recently welcomed back Allan Finn, who will offer training for clients
who aren’t close to a regional centre via a web-based system called WebEx. WebEx
allows a live Ovid session on the screen and discussion on a shared teleconference. All you
need is an internet connection and a nearby telephone. The teleconference access is charged
as a local call, so there are no long distance fees. The machine which you use for the WebEx
internet session needs to have a browser (IE or Netscape) and have Java installed.
If you would like to request web-based or
face-to-face Ovid training, please do not hesitate to contact CIAP or
Belinda.sharp@wolterskluwer.com
from OVID.
And don’t forget you are not alone….
If you ever have any questions about Ovid, or the Ovid
databases, journals and books, OVID is available to answer your questions. The support email
address is ausupport@ovid.com
send them a message during business hours to receive immediate help.
Review of training - coming soon
We will be undertaking a review of the training
and will be conducting focus groups to find out how we can best provide training. Further
information will be available in the coming months.

BMJ Cinical Evidence– move from OVID to BMJ Platform
BMJ Clinical Evidence is one of the world's most authoritative
