Welcome to the October edition of the CIAP Newsletter

Inside this issue:

OvidSP is scheduled for release on 26th October 2007

To introduce OvidSP an option to access OvidSP will appear on the Ovid tool bar on the 26th October 2007. Choose this option and it will take you to the new OvidSP interface. You can then search OvidSP in your normal way and explore some of the new features. The existing platform, Ovid Gateway, will remain for several months.

The default on OvidSP is the basic search. In the Basic Search tab, Natural Language Processing (NLP) for free text searching is available. Early feedback indicates that OvidSP is an intuitive, easy-to-use, search and discovery platform. Simultaneous searching across all content types—books, journals, and databases—is more streamlined and simpler.

Information and training session will be held for NSW Health and rural sites. Dates will be announced soon.

CIAP Training Review - Focus groups to be held in October

While CIAP continues to grow, there is still a strong view that it can be used more effectively. Barriers to usage cited in the user survey included both training and support issues. During October there will be a review of CIAP training with the aim to:-

  • assess the effectiveness of the current program,
  • understand user requirements to support skills transfer, and
  • recommend alternative methods of delivery

A reporting and evaluation framework to inform ongoing requirements will also be identified.

We would like to interview a range of interviewees from practitioner groups so please come along and participate. Contact the organisers listed below for details.

OVID Databases - Full Text Linking

Over the past few months CIAP has been working closely with HCN and OVID to enable full-text linking within the OVID Database search results. This has been completed for the publisher platforms listed below;

  • Emerald
  • Highwire
  • Ingenta
  • MD Consult
  • Nursing Consult
  • OVID
  • Pubmed Central
  • ScienceDirect
  • Springer
  • Wiley

How to Search Multiple Ovid databases

For example you can search Medline, Cinahl, Embase and PsycInfo all at the same time. Here’s how:

  • Login using ‘USE
  • Choose ‘Ovid Citation Databases’ from the drop down menu
  • Select the databases that you wish to search by clicking the box next to each one
  • Click on ‘Continue’ at the top of the page
  • The normal OVID search screen will now appear

Searching multiple databases has the advantage of finding more records at a time, and it also allows you to remove duplicate records that are found in more than one database – called ‘deduping’ by OVID. To remove the duplicates once you have finished your search click on the ‘Remove Duplicates’ button at the bottom of the search history.

However Mapping to Subject heading is not available in multi file searching, and Subject searching is only effective when the same subject heading is used on each database.

For example, ‘stroke patient’ as a subject heading only works in Cinahl and Embase, but not Medline and PsychInfo where you will get no hits. On the other hand, ‘breast neoplasms’ works in all the databases.

In multi database search you can search for words and phrases in the title and abstract of articles, as well as for authors. For example: stroke patient$.ti,ab

finds the phrase in the title or abstract of all the databases. (note the use of ‘$’ as a truncation symbol to retrieve patient or patients)

CIAP now has an ‘On trial’ page

This page has been created to trial resources and provide feedback. Our first trial is for the Cancer Institute NSW and lists 5 journals under consideration for purchase. Please have a look at these resources and remember to complete the feedback form available on the page.

BMJ Clinical Evidence

The PDFs on BMJ Clinical Evidence have been enabled. CIAP users can also keep up to date via email alerts or RSS feed. BMJ Clinical Evidence is one of the world's most authoritative medical resources for informing treatment decisions and improving patient care. It is located under Evidence Based Practice on the left hand side on the home page of CIAP.

‘You can do anything you think you can. This knowledge is literally the gift of the gods, for through it you can solve every human problem. It should make of you an incurable optimist. It is the open door. ’

Did You Know - Natural Medicines Database

Natural Medicines Database

Researchers and editors at Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database have rated the significance of over 1600 interactions between natural products and conventional drugs. CIAP users now get an evidence-based rating on all known or suspected interactions. You don't have to do anything different. Just check out the ‘Interactions with Drugs’ section of a monograph and you'll see a specific rating for each interaction:

  • Major - Do not use this combination
  • Moderate - Be cautious with this combination
  • Minor - Be watchful with this combination

Each of these easy-to-understand ratings also includes details on interaction severity, likelihood of occurrence, and level of evidence.

Featuring - Complementary Therapies in Medicine

Complementary Therapies in Medicine

Complementary Therapies in Medicine is an international, peer-reviewed journal that has considerable appeal to anyone who seeks objective and critical information on complementary therapies or who wishes to deepen their understanding of these approaches.

It will be of particular interest to healthcare practitioners including family practitioners, complementary therapists, nurses, and physiotherapists; to academics including social scientists and CAM researchers; to healthcare managers; and to patients.

Provide by the Cancer Institute NSW we would encourage the use of this journal to ensure an ongoing subscription.
