APOP Project

The Acute Post-Operative Pain (APOP) project is a national quality improvement initiative funded and supported by the National Prescribing Service. NSW TAG is coordinating the NSW arm of the project.

**Release of the APOP e-DUE Toolkit- June 2009

The National Prescribing Service Ltd (NPS) is pleased to announce the release of the drug use evaluation (DUE) toolkit for Acute Postoperative Pain (APOP) management in hospitals. The DUE toolkit was developed following completion of the national quality improvement project on management of acute postoperative pain which was undertaken in 62 Australian Hospitals (including 20 hospitals in NSW) during 2006/2007.

It consists of a downloadable electronic audit tool (e-DUE) and educational resources. The new standalone APOP e-DUE audit tool is more than a data collection tool. It can generate an export file and a summary report in an electronic format, and is reusable.

Postoperative surgical units may use the quality improvement tool to measure and improve the quality of postoperative pain management. The quality measures include pain assessment, postoperative analgesic use and patient satisfaction with pain control.

Please see the media release for further information and for distribution to hospital staff. Click here

Hospital Recruitment - October 2006

A large number of expressions of interest from NSW and ACT hospitals were received by the NSW TAG office. A total of twenty hospitals have enrolled to participate in the NSW arm of APOP. These include prinicipal referral hospitals, private hospitals and rural hospitals.

Baseline Data Collection - December 2006 and January 2007

During December 2006 and January 2007 participating hospitals are collecting baseline information on current practice in the area of post operative pain managment. These data will be used as part of the feedback sessions planned during the intervention strategy in 2007.

Academic Detailing Workshop - March 2007

Each participating hospital has the opportunity to send up to two representatives to an academic detailing workshop in March 2007. The workshop will include skills training in academic detailing and a therpeutic briefing on acute post operative pain managment.

Education Intervention - April to June 2007

A suite of intervention tools are being used across the APOP hospitals to promote the key messages of the project and influence the management of postoperative pain. Wall posters, bookmarks, PowerPoint presentations and academic detailing cards have been made available to all hospitals.

Follow-up Audit - July to September 2007

APOP hospitals have commenced identifying another 50 surgical cases in the follow-up audit. The three components of the audit, the inpatient chart review, GP survey and patient post-discharge evaluation will be conducted during the follow-up period. A final hospital, state and national feedback report will be prepared upon receiving the final set of data from the APOP hospitals.
